Calgary Exhibition and Stampede “Aggie Days” has been another hit thanks to Eastside Dodge Service Manager Jim Barnes and his wife Leigh-Anna.

This annual event was held at Stampede Park at the BMO Center during the week of April 8th to the 14th. Aggie Days is an agricultural education event for urban children. “We are teaching kids where food comes from. We are in charge of the beef,” said Jim. “Most people don’t know that 99% of a beef animal is used.”

Jim has been volunteering for 10 years and Leigh-Anna has been dedicated for 17 years. “We are both farm kids. We were both in 4H and got asked to help out one year,” commented Jim. Both Jim and his wife grew up raising beef and used to show cattle as well.

Leigh-Anna is the Vice Chair of the Aggie Days Committee. “I used to bring animals to Aggie Days. It was so heart touching and I thought I should be involved. I love it.”

Leigh-Anna thinks education of agriculture is extremely important. “It is important for people to know where their food comes from. That it comes from a farmer who works hard 365 days a year and most people don’t understand that.”

Leigh-Anna and Jim use various demonstrations to teach kids about agriculture. “We use actual cow milking, shearing sheep; you name it, we do it,” said Leigh-Anna.

This year Aggie Day had approximately 50,000 people visit in five days. “People love it,” said Leigh-Anna. “They say they ‘had no idea someone had to work so hard for me to have that.’”

Not only do Jim and Leigh-Anna educate local kids in their community, they educate a generation. “We have done Skyping with kids in Africa, Asia and the United States.” Kids get to ask questions and compare the agriculture in Canada to their own country.

Eastside Dodge’s employees are not only dedicated to their customers, they are dedicated to making the community they live in better. Jim and Leigh-Anna Barnes are the prime example of this dedication.
